Start Over for Spring.

Can you feel it?  Spring is here, and while we’ve been anxiously longing for the return of song birds, warm weather and longer days, on a primal level we’ve also been awaiting the promise of the fresh start Springtime seems to herald.

I can’t think of a  better time to clear the decks on your home environment than right now.   The season is turning, days are growing longer and all of nature seems to conspire for a fresh start. Birds are tending to their nests, trees are budding out, and all sorts of beautiful things are poking up through the winter soil.  According to Feng Shui, seasonal shifts are extremely powerful times to facilitate change in life. What is Feng Shui?  Feng Shui is the 5,000 year old art of placement. Practitioners believe that what you have in your home and how you place it affects the flow of energy in your environment and ultimately your life.

So how to start over?  Get rid of your clutter!  After working with clients for the last 25 years, I believe that clutter is 100%  to blame for most of the negative Feng Shui issues I encounter.  In fact, most clients trying to lose weight tend to hold on to clutter, and 100% of clients that are pack rats are having money issues.

When we’re afraid to let go of “things”, we’re tapping into poverty consciousness. We’re not trusting that if one day we need the item we’re not currently using, the resources to replace it will be there.
My rule?  If you don’t use it, lose it.  If you’re having a hard time parting with Aunt Violet’s Christmas gift from 1998, take a picture and keep the memory, then consider someone less fortunate that would probably treasure it.

Think of this when you’re struggling:  even if you regret giving something away years from now, chances are there will be a new and improved version available when you wake up suddenly wanting it again.

When we hoard or refuse to let go, it sends a signal to the brain that you’re keeping things “just in case”.  Just in case thinking sound like this:  What if I won’t be able to buy it again?  What if I can’t afford it when I need it?  What if I regret not having it anymore?

What if is a sign that you’re in fear and as you know, there’s no power in fear.

Power lies in knowing that if you need it again, you’ll find a way to buy it or borrow it.  Trusting that we’ve got the means and the wherewithal to get it when we need it is powerful.  Holding on just in case is fear based and poverty consciousness.

Want to make an instant impact that you’ll feel immediately?  Take a garbage bag and fill it with 29 things from each room of your house.  Then take that bag to a donation site before you can change your mind.

If it’s broken, fix it or recycle it. If you don’t use it, donate it.

This exercise is easier than you might think.  Start with that kitchen junk drawer…I’m betting you’ll get a good 12 items out of just that one drawer!

So how do you stay strong while doing this?  Here are a few mantras to tell yourself:

  • “If I don’t use it, I’m going to lose it.  I’m not going to keep things just in case.
  • I trust the universe will provide me with what I need when I need it.  There is someone out there that needs this more than I do and will actually use this rather than my keeping it just in case.”

Remember, hoarding and clutter block the flow of abundance, and represents “holding on” which in turn, according to Feng Shui blocks the flow of everything.

Spring is the perfect time to start over and clear the decks.  Getting a jump start on it will feel wonderful and open you up to focus on other things – like summer fun!
